The Lord rules over everything with a cemented history of displaying great power, signs, and wonders among his people and other nations. The finger of God does greater things now and forevermore.
Have you heard of the phrase the “finger of God?” It’s recorded 4 times in the Bible. Several Christians and even non-believers use it to mean something mind-blowing or supernatural.
In this post, I will talk about how the scriptures have recorded events leading to the phrase “finger of God” and its meaning and how Christians can be confident in the unrestrained power of God.
I will mainly handle what transpired between Moses and the Magicians of Pharoah.
Today, as you find yourself reading this content, I strongly believe you will be inspired enough to cling to the saving hand of God, even in times of difficulties, you will not be afraid because the Lord you serve is Omnipotent.
What is the finger of God?
The finger of God can simply be understood as God’s evident power and skill over everything.
Sometimes, you may wonder how miracles, healings, and signs and wonders happen in the lives of people. As a believer, it takes the hand of God to experience healing and anything supernatural. Had it not been God, many of us would have been destroyed or killed by the enemy.
Imagine the number of near-death experience stories we are presented with. The Lord’s hand is continually doing unimaginable things in the lives of people. A believer would surely know the grace and supernatural power of God have been the reason.
Now let me take you back to the Biblical events that talk about God’s finger moving things beyond human comprehension.
1. The Third Plague
The first account is found in the third plague out of the ten God sent on Pharoah and his people.
According to the Bible, when Moses stood in front of Pharoah and his magicians, there was a great display of power.
A battle happened between evil powers and the power of God. They were able to replicate the first and second plagues God caused but failed the third one.
After these magicians failed to replicate the miraculous sign in which God turned all the dust in Egypt into gnats (lice), they confessed to the great power of God by saying this is the finger of God.
The Bible reads:
“They did so; Aaron extended his hand with his staff, he struck the dust of the ground, and it became gnats on people and on animals. All the dust of the ground became gnats throughout all the land of Egypt. When the magicians attempted to bring forth gnats by their secret arts, they could not. So there were gnats on people and on animals.” Exodus 19:17-18)
Here the power of the magicians failed —forcing them to acknowledge the Omnipotence of God. The Bible says He is the God who shuts and no one opens, He opens and no one closes. (Revelation 3:7)
As God intensified the display of the exceeding greatness of power successively, the Egyptian magicians finally accepted defeat.
“The magicians said to Pharaoh, “It is the finger of God!” But Pharaoh’s heart remained hard, and he did not listen to them, just as the LORD had predicted.” (Exodus 8:19)
In fact, this Biblical event alone encourages faithful Christians to boast about the exceeding greatness of God’s power. In times of challenges from the camp of the enemy, one must believe in the saving mighty hand of the Lord.
As a Christian, you must know very well that the challenges that crop up in your life are nothing compared to the power of the Living God. Remember that God is greater than the highs and the lows.
The devil and his agents have vowed to challenge the authority of God, instill fear in people, and frustrate them by any means necessary.
Interestingly, Jesus Christ has already won the battle for us (Colossians 2:14 – 15) so there is no need to fret.
Understand that God permits evil spirits to manifest themselves in some ways. This opens the eyes of men to know that there is a spiritual world with real spiritual battles going on. In this case, no one is exempted. It is imperative to be on guard as a Christian.
God being so wise has allowed their operations to go on and demonstrated to us that all these evil forces are under His absolute control. And so men should have confidence in His goodness and power.
I believe the enemy fighting against your life, marriage, health, goals, finances, jobs, etc will soon throw in the towel and confess that it’s the finger of God that has set you free.
2. Writing Of The 10 Commandments
The second account of God’s finger in the Bible is about the writing of the 10 commandments.
“He gave Moses two tablets of testimony when he had finished speaking with him on Mount Sinai, tablets of stone written by the finger of God.” (Exodus 31:18)
This verse depicts a supernatural event that happened on Mount Sinai. God Himself wrote on those tablets with His finger.
The commandments were written by the power of God. The following scripture sheds more light on it:
“And the Lord said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mountain, and be thou there; and I will give thee tables of stone WHICH I HAVE WRITTEN, that thou mayest teach them;” (Exodus 24:12)
Just as I said earlier. The finger of God is the power of God and here the power of God wrote on the tablets.
The finger of God wrote on two stone tablets. It is good to take note of how the power of God can do the unthinkable.
3. Moses Confirmed God’s Own Finger Wrote On the Stone Tablets.
The third lesson about the finger of God is about Moses’ confirmation of God’s handwriting on the two tablets. God made him hew the stones for Him to write on. That is amazing. He can do anything because all things were created by Him, all powers and created things are subjected to His rulership.
“The LORD gave me the two stone tablets, written by the very finger of God, and on them was everything he said to you at the mountain from the midst of the fire at the time of that assembly.” (Deuteronomy 9:10)
4. Jesus Talked About The Finger Of God
Jesus cast out demons by the power of God. He is the same God who existed before the universe (John 1:1).
The Pharisees with their hatred, jealousy, and hardened hearts questioned Jesus where he got his authority. These people refused to believe that Jesus was the Son of God who came from above with the power to do all things.
After accusing him of using evil powers, he responded:
“But if I cast out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has already overtaken you.” (Luke 11:20)
They accused him of casting out demons through the power of Beelzebul (Satan). So here also, the Bible clearly tells us that the finger of God is the power of God and when God’s power is in action, miracles happen, and signs and wonders also happen. But the enemy is always against that. Jesus is God in the flesh and so with him, all things are possible.
Which Bible Verses Talk About The Finger Of God?
There are four verses that have recorded the use of God’s finger in something miraculous. And here they are.
1. Exodus 8:19 “The magicians said to Pharaoh, “It is the finger of God!”
2. Exodus 31:18 “tablets of stone written by the finger of God.”
3. Deuteronomy 9:10 ” The LORD gave me the two stone tablets, written by the very finger of God”
4. Luke 11:20 “But if I cast out demons by the finger of God…”
Thus there are 4 distinct verses (3 from the Old Testament and 1 from the New Testament that talk about the finger of God.
Finally, Christians today attribute some of their breakthroughs, healings, protection, favor, happiness, and success to the finger of God. Even some wealthy men in our world today credit their success to the God’s power.
The same God came down from heaven in flesh as Jesus Christ. The Bible says, in him dwells all the deity of God. So Christians can now experience the power of God or the finger of God through Jesus.
It is good and worthy to thank God for miraculously protecting us from harm and all evil plots against us. It takes the Lord’s finger to be a conqueror over Satan, his angels, and all crafty devices.
If God sets His finger on your failing marriage, health, job, education, etc, then there will be restoration and great miracles that will shame your enemies.
