Never Be Ignorant | 4 Powerful Ways To Grow Spiritually As A Christian

Often, many Christians become dull in their spiritual lives. They fail to grow to demonstrate spiritual maturity. Don’t ever be ignorant about the four things that teach believers how to grow spiritually.

How to grow spiritually

The Christian journey is purely spiritual as stated in the Bible. Through the Holy Spirit, we can endure any challenge and enjoy all the glorious and trustworthy promises from our Lord Jesus Christ. Do you know how to grow spiritually? Let me share some of the best ways that can help you beef up your spiritual strength in the Lord. It’s time to grow huge spiritual muscles, boost your endurance and maintain your victory over the devil and his crafty devices.

If anyone calls himself a Christian and fails to be a spiritual person —then he is lacking the connection of the Holy Spirit who leads us into all truths and righteousness. God delights in those who strive to lead a righteous life.

God says He is Spirit and so those who worship Him must do that in truth and spirit. (John 4:24)

What Is Spiritual Growth?

Spiritual growth involves the practices that help increase your knowledge, wisdom and understanding of God. It is a working process for everyone who comes to know Jesus Christ. God’s desire is for mankind to seek Him wholeheartedly.

The Knowledge Of God Is The Key To Spiritual Growth

Is Jesus your friend? Do you really know him? He is the Word that became flesh and dwelt among us. Through him, everything in the universe came to being and he holds everything together by his power.

Let me tell you something; your knowledge of God itself is a weapon that frightens the devil. You should be rich in the word of God to break the strongholds of the devil and anything that hinders your spiritual life.

How to grow in the Spirit Bible verse

“For the weapons of our warfare are not human weapons, but are made powerful by God for tearing down strongholds. We tear down arguments and every arrogant obstacle that is raised up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to make it obey Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:4 – 5)

Stay hungry for God, thirst for Him all day. He will fill you with every good thing you need here on earth and in the afterlife.

Bearing the fruit of the Spirit also proves your spiritual maturity. It should be seen in the way you talk, dress and interact with your fellow humans. Eg, be humble, peaceful, kind, gentle, loving etc,

Prepare To Grow Spiritually

Take a look at your current Christian life; do you acknowledge any growth in your relationship with the Lord?

Growth starts from infancy to adulthood. As you keep on reading this post —where will you place yourself? If you are still an infant, then it is time you grow up in your spiritual walk with Jesus Christ.

Even the apostles began as infants by consuming soft food before eating solid food.

“But solid food is for the mature, whose perceptions are trained by practice to discern both good and evil.” (Hebrews 5:14)

Maturity in Christianity is very essential; forget about being a religious person and focus on your relationship with Jesus Christ. Religious or denominational doctrines can confuse and keep you in spiritual prison with no growth.

Strive to grow spiritually like Paul. Your childhood days and thoughts should be over. It is time to think like a real ambassador of Christ.

“When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. But when I became an adult, I set aside childish ways.” (1 Corinthians 13:11)

Each day —live a victorious life by making God first in everything you do. There are a couple of things you can do to increase your knowledge of God. I will discuss that briefly in the next section.

“Until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God – a mature person, attaining to the measure of Christ’s full stature.” (Ephesians 4:13)

How To Grow Spiritually

Knowing how to grow spiritually is about acquainting yourself with the knowledge of God. In Hosea 4:6 God said His people (Israel) perished because they rejected Him; they failed to know Him.

There are a few things every Christian must do to grow spiritually. You can’t sit back and be wishing you are spiritually mature. Oh uh.. It doesn’t work like that. It takes some devotion or practice. Take a look at them:

1. Prayers

To ensure spiritual growth in your life, you must be very prayerful. In fact, on several occasions, the Bible commands us to pray at all things. This is one of the powerful weapons for fighting against the devil and anything that rises against the knowledge of God.

Pray often and ask the Holy Spirit to strengthen you to stay devoted to God. Any prayer you say draws you closer to God.

“With every prayer and petition, pray at all times in the Spirit, and to this end be alert, with all perseverance and requests for all the saints.” (Ephesians 6:18)

The early prophets, Christians and even Jesus Christ himself led a prayerful life. Why not you? Your soul needs this special nourishment to grow —so pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17)

2. Study The Bible

The Bible is the word of God. The more you read, the more you feed your soul with the spiritual milk for nourishment. Find time to read the Bible, meditate on it and be a doer of what it says. The Lord knows your heart. If you stay committed, He will bless you and fulfill all the promises the scriptures say.

3. Devote Yourself To Fasting

If you really want to be mature spiritually, then devote yourself to fasting. At least once a week. This is one special way to feed the spirit living inside you. You end up growing spiritual muscles and strength.

Prayers and fasting for spiritual growth

The Bible reminded us how our flesh fights against the spirit living in us in the book of Galatians.

“For the flesh has desires that are opposed to the Spirit, and the Spirit has desires that are opposed to the flesh, for these are in opposition to each other, so that you cannot do what you want.” (Galatians 5:17)

Crucify your flesh and walk in the Spirit at all times. This will help you to grow spiritually as a child of God.

4. Sing Praises

The last thing I want to touch on here is about exalting the name of God through songs. Praise His Holy name just like King David. Surely, if you take this seriously and sing from your heart continually — you will have angelic visitations. The angels sing and worship the Lord in Him. This means God loves to hear our songs and praises.

When your praises go up —He comes to dwell with you. It creates a spiritual connection for you to feel the presence of the Holy Spirit. I do experience this on several occasions —oh my God…tears of joy flow down my cheeks… The spirit within me rejoices when I praises His Holy name.

When Paul and Silas were arrested and put in prison; what did they do? They sang —then something miraculously happened.

“About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the rest of the prisoners were listening to them” (Acts 16:25)

In verse 26, it says suddenly a great earthquake occurred that shook the foundations of the prison… The chains fell off their hands and feet.

Again, the Bible encourages us to sing hymns, songs and praises. Even making songs in our hearts please God. It’s a simple practice every Christian can do to grow spiritually.

“Speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music in your hearts to the Lord.” (Ephesians 5:19)

These are helpful practices you can inculcate in your Christian life to grow in the spirit. Make them your daily habits.

I strongly believe through these ways about how to grow in the spirit, some of you might get spiritual gifts, see in the spirit and audibly hear God’s voice. Your connection with God will become stronger and more effective against any spirit of darkness.

Jesus Christ has already won the victory for us on Calvary. Just put on the full armor of God and enjoy the spiritual benefits that sometimes manifest in the flesh for everyone to see the glory of God. Stay Blessed. I welcome your comments, feedback, or contribution.
