What Moral Lesson To Learn From The Story Of Samson?

The story of Samson and Delilah has many good lessons for men of today who fall in love without taking caution. It further teaches about the importance of obedience to God.

The story of Samson
Time to know about the story of Samson and his tragic death. A fountain depicting his courageous act of killing a lion with his bare hands.

Today, the story of Samson and Delilah in the Bible is so popular that even non-Christians have heard about it. It’s a story with a great moral lesson for our today’s married couples, singles or anyone who falls in love. It’s an educative story for kids as well. But most importantly for the youth — just like how King Solomon reminded people in their youthful stage to remember their Creator before it’s too late. The youthful stage is full of passion for fun.

The story of Samson and Delilah movie for instance has been around for several years and most of us watched it when we were kids. Yes, it teaches children about the dangers of disobedience and ‘too much trust’ in mere human beings.

Bear in mind that Samson and other Bible characters such as King Saul, Jonah, Moses, and others did not show obedience to God at some points in their services. And because of that God punished them appropriately. They paid for their disobedience. We must, therefore, be very careful not to be “sons of disobedience.”

The description of the tragedy of Samson was pathetic as his lover, Delilah betrayed him. This is a good short story for kids; especially those from Christian families. There is a heart-touching moral lesson in Samson and Delilah’s story. We must take it seriously so that we do not fall into the dreadful hand of the Lord.

Most of us have only heard of and known Samson as the strongest man ever to live on our planet. To me, the story of Samson is one of the greatest stories ever told. His lifestyle was so real and intriguing as the Bible authenticates it in Judges chapter 14 to chapter 16.

It all began when the Children of Israel did evil against God which provoked him to give them to the Philistines to torture them for forty good years.

God then made his Angel appear unto Manoah’s wife to deliver a message that though she is barren she will conceive and give birth to a baby boy (Samson).

Manoah was Samson’s father, he prayed to God to send the angel down again to clarify things about the unborn child. Hold and behold God listened to his prayers, and the angel came again in the form of a man who didn’t become recognized enough by Manoah.

The Angel gave them rules that would govern the child when he is born. He said the incoming son should stay away from wine and strong drinks, and anything unclean, and never cut his hair.

Who Is Samson In The Bible?

Samson was the son of Manoah, of the tribe of Dan, a deliverer and judge of the southern tribes of the Hebrews who reigned with mighty strength through the Spirit of God for 20 years. His story is recorded in the book of Judges.

The Birth And Rise Of Samson

Manoah’s wife gave birth to a baby boy and named him Samson. The name Samson means ‘sun’. He was born at Zorah which was opposite a town called Bethshemesh, which means ‘House of the sun’.

The Spirit of the Lord was on him, and when he grew up, he found a beautiful woman who was a Philistine so he asked his father to help him marry her.

Here is the beginning of the downfall of Samson, “a woman“, a very poisonous one. But Samson’s father objected to his proposal because the woman he was talking about wasn’t an Israelite, but from the enemies (Philistines).

Samson insisted, so his father and mother went along with him to see the special woman he has talked about. When they reached the vine-gardens of Timnah a lion rushed unto him but the Spirit of the Lord filled him, giving him enough strength which enabled him to tear the lion’s jaws into two.

This young man’s strength and ability to tear apart the lion is a possible inspiration for many movies to show how energetic their heroes are. The major characters are seen to be invincible.

An example is Wayne Johnson’s movie entitled “Hercules” which was cast in the year 2014. He did the same thing by killing a lion. Any warrior who can kill a lion becomes a royal hero.

Anyway, the best method is to kill that beast with bare hands and that is what exactly Samson did. At that very moment, his parent wasn’t even aware that he had killed a lion and he also didn’t tell them.

Now after seeing the woman of his heart, he took her home. Made, love, had fun together. Samson’s first love didn’t last long as her father thought he didn’t love her very much so he gave her to someone else(Samson’s friend) to marry her, recommending Samson to marry the sister of his wife who was much prettier and fairer than her.

Judges 15:2 states, He spoke to Samson;

‘I really thought that you hated her. So I gave her to your best man (the friend that helped Samson at the wedding). Her younger sister is more attractive. Marry her instead.’

It came to pass when the enemies of Samson ambushed him, the Spirit of the Lord came upon him and he was able to kill a thousand men with a jaw-bone of an ass. Where he killed these people became known as ‘Ramath – Lehi‘.

Samson Finds His Second Wife, Delilah.

He went to a place called Gaza, and here he found his second love called Delilah. She was incited by the chiefs of Philistine to seduce Samson by all means necessary to know about the secret behind his strength.

Delilah accepted to play that devilish role —so she began making investigations by asking Samson about the secret of his strength. He lied to her several times but Delilah insisted on many tricks and finally, she succeeded.

Delilah cutting the hair of Samson
“She made him sleep on her knees; and she called for a man, and shaved off the seven locks of his head; and he began to weaken, and his strength went from him.” (Judges 16:19)

Women are very powerful in terms of deceit. If anyone tells you to fear women then that person knows exactly what he is saying.

Here, the Bible gives us a powerful moral lesson from the story of Samson and Delilah. That love was built on certain conditions. So it wasn’t real.

Delilah became the greatest cause of man’s downfall apart from Eve. In the name of love, he brought down the strongest man ever to live. Although he was the strongest, full of the Spirit of God, and a judge for Israel but he failed woefully due to disobedience.

“And she said to him, why do you say you are my lover when your heart is not mine. Three times you have made sport of me and have not made clear to me the secret of your strength”(Judges 16:15).

Here is what is known as the power of a woman, Samson was blindfolded by love and became vulnerable to destruction for the first time in his life.

Delilah using her seductive language and strategy got exactly what she has been longing for. He revealed his secret by saying that if anyone cuts his hair he will be like any ordinary man.

She then sent a message to the Philistines; “….come up, for this time he has left all his heart to me….” (Judges 16:8).

Because he poured out all his heart on the wrong woman, Samson became a mockery figure. Shame, disappointment, pains, and death knocked at his door.

The Tragedy In the Story Of Samson — His Downfall

The saddest part of the story of Samson begins here when he fell asleep by Delilah and the Philistines came to cut his hair. That very moment the Spirit of the Lord left him and so he became like a normal human being.

Delilah was paid by the Chiefs of Philistine for handling Samson to them. They chained him, plugged out his eyes, sent him to Gaza for his death.

The Philistines then gave praise to their gods that they have handed over their greatest enemy to them. Samson was imprisoned, tortured, ridiculed whiles he was in chains. He found himself at the lowest point of his life.

With pains and anger, he cursed the name “Delilah” and up to date, I haven’t heard any woman called Delilah and I don’t ever think any parent would name their daughter Delilah, for that name became an abomination when Delilah betrayed his love. Names do influence us so try to find out the meaning of your name if you don’t know. A change of name can help open new doors of hope and opportunities for you.

For instance, Jacob’s name was changed to Israel. There are other Bible figures whose names were changed to have a future full of success and happiness.

He destroyed the Temple by breaking the 2 main Pillars
“Samson took hold of the two middle pillars that supported the temple and he leaned against them, with his right hand on one and his left hand on the other. Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!” He pushed hard and the temple collapsed on the rulers and all the people in it. He killed many more people in his death than he had killed during his life” (Judges 16:29-30).

It happened that Samson prayed and asked God for one last strength; when he got a grab of the two main pillars supporting the ceremonial ground of his execution, thanks to the almighty God. He listened to him.

The Bible accounts that —there was a great slaughter of the Philistines by the power of God. There was no way anyone can survive; even if anyone will survive; then not Delilah. She was present at the celebration. She died too. It was God’s perfect plan to destroy the Philistines.

How a loving father he has been to his children. God is ever ready to listen to us when we call upon him. His faithfulness never ceases.

Samson pulled down the entire building by making payments for the treatment they had given him and the Bible records that he killed more people than he had killed in his entire life. So that was a big blow for the Philistines — they messed up with God’s anointed child.

Moral Lesson From The Story of Samson And Delilah

Moral: The story of Samson tells us about how dangerous and unfaithful women could be. This has made the name “Delilah” an abomination and no woman would like that name but some of them are modern-day “Delilahs.” It is advisable for every woman who is like this to change.

Anytime people mention the name “Delilah”  the connotation and whatever follows is evil.

Anytime a musician mentions the name “Delilah” in his songs then it’s about an evil love experience with a woman. Samson said that name will be a curse on the lips of men and it is true, judging from what we see now.

Other moral lessons we can learn from the story of Samson and Delilah include:

• Being obedient to the voice Of God.

• Learn how to put God first before our fleshly desires

• To allow God to help us make the right choice for a marriage partner. There are many ungodly women out there.

Facts About The Story Of Samson To Remember

Samson was disobedient to God. This made him face such a tragic death. He obeyed only one rule from God (Not cutting his hair until finally, Delilah deceived him) and ignored the rest.

Despite his disobedience throughout his years, God worked with him and made him face the punishment later. We call this the justice of God. He said in the book of Nahum that sin will never go unpunished. God planned to redeem the Israelites from their oppressors through Samson. His plan came to fruition with glory.

His will perfectly got fulfilled at the price of Samson’s life because he disobeyed God.

How The Spirit Of God Empowered Samson To Do Marvelous Things With His Strength

Despite Samson’s Disobedience, God Worked With Him Until His Hair Got Shaved By His Enemies.

• The Lord’s Spirit came upon Samson in power. He tore the lion into pieces as if it were a young goat. (Judges 14:6).

• He found a jawbone from a mule that had just died. He killed 1000 men with it.

He said:

‘With a mule’s jawbone, I have made them seem stupid like mules. With a mule’s jawbone, I have killed 1000 men.’(Judges 15:16).

• Verse 15:17 tells us that when he had said this, he threw the jawbone away. He called the place ‘Ramath Lehi’, which means Jawbone Hill. This, therefore, tells us about the origin of ‘Jawbone Hill’.

• In verse 18, he needed water to drink. And he cried out to the Lord. ‘You have given a very great*victory to your servant. Surely you do not intend to let me die because there is not enough water! Then these dirty Philistines will catch me.’

• In verse 19, God opened up a hole in the ground in Lehi. And water came out of it. When Samson drank, he became strong again. So he called the spring of water En Hakkore (which means ‘Caller’s Spring’). Which is still in existence in our days.

Judges 15:3; Samson said, ‘Now I have a complete right to punish the Philistines. I will really hurt them.’

• Verse 4 – 5; He caught 300 foxes and he tied their tails together two by two. He fixed a torch to every pair and he lit the torches. Then he freed them in the Philistines’ fields where their corn was. He burned up the corn that they had harvested. And he burned up the corn in the fields. He did it because they gave his wife to his friend.’

• The Philistines had said, ‘Our God (Dagon), has delivered our enemy into our hands.’ They failed to know it was Samson’s God who had done it. That is why the whole building they were doing the celebration fell.

Commentary And Recommendations From The Author

After reading the whole book of Samson and watching its movies I noticed something. One controversial scene in the movie doesn’t depict the exact description in the Bible. In fact that current movie about Samson also has the same inconsistencies.

In almost all the movies I’ve watched; Samson is seen having a good fight with the lion before it tore it apart.

From the Bible, he did not struggle with the lion before… He just tore it apart so easily:

“The LORD’s spirit empowered him and he tore the lion in two with his bare hands as easily as one would tear a young goat. But he did not tell his father or mother what he had done” ( Judges 14:5).

Killing a lion was an easy task for a man like Samson. There was no need to struggle or fight. Just like a snap of a finger and enemies start falling apart.

Anyone who tried to contend with Samson failed because God was with him. He avenged Samson and the Israelites with a glorious victory in the end.

  1. Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well. But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the Lord , that he sought an occasion against the Philistines: for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel.

It seems to me that God wanted Samson to chose someone that wasn’t good for him….he sought an occasion against the Philistines.

While I agree you should be careful in whom you choose for a spouse, and that women can be deceptive, Samson did not seem to be the best person either. He also went to a harlot.

    1. This is such a crazy story! I had to point out that when I read it closer it doesn’t actually say that he “layed down with her” just that he kept lying there. Everything he did tricked the philistines, that occasion was so that he could rip the gate off and carry it up a mountain! HAHA. You can only imagine what it would be like to live the life of a Samson, or a King David or Solomon. If there were a day I got a chance to even say two words to those men, I doubt I could muster even one. No doubt they would give all glory to Jehovah.
